Hiring Sales Representatives

Using sales reps may boost your profit exponentially.  However, finding sales rep may burst a blood vessel if you don't know how and or where to look.  There are a couple things to keep in mind:

First, know the two major types of sales reps you can employ: staff  reps, and independent reps:

1.Staff Reps

Staff reps are those that you permanently hire.  What you gain in potential control and development of by having your own staff of reps, you will lose in expenses as you will most likely need to provide them a baseline salary in addition to sales commission as economic incentive.  Also, they may or may not have experience selling the types of products you are producing but the good news is that with them on your staff, you can be sure that they won't using their skills to push a competitor's products.

2.Independent Reps

Independent sales reps differ from sales reps on your staff in that they sell products from multiple producers.  While it may sound counterproductive to use the same rep as your competitors, it may actually be the best option.

Independent reps likely have the clientelle you'd like to target already in their contact pool.  More importantly, if they sell similar products to your own, they have a proven track record of pushing your type of product and being successful at it.    Most importantly, independent reps don't require salary: you can entice them with high commission rates instead of needing to provide a baseline salary.

Second, know where to look for reps:

1. Third party matchmaking services

Websites like SalesRepHunter, or RepLocate offer subscription services to match business owners with sales reps.  You can also search for brick and mortar agencies which offer the same services.

2. Agencies

Independent reps can also form their own agencies to advertise their services.  As agents tend to specialize in a particular product line, agencies reflect their specialization.  A good example of a specialized sales agency is Taylor Made, which specializes in horse sales.

3 Trade Shows

Another good way to find reps is to network at trade shows.  You can either approach reps directly, or network with other entrepreneurs.
